Social Security hosts 40th Induction Ceremony of 2023-2024 Susanna Lee High School Scholarship
Basseterre, Thursday 21st September 2023 – On Wednesday, 20th September 2023, at 4 pm, the Social Security Board held the prestigious Susanna Lee Scholarship Induction Ceremony at the Cuna Caribbean Conference Center. Themed “Climbing to 40 and Beyond,” the event marked the 40th anniversary of the scholarship program.
The ceremony was chaired by Ms. JeNise Carty, Legal Officer at Social Security. The proceedings commenced with the national anthem and a prayer led by Pastor Andron Tuckett, setting the tone for an inspiring evening.
Mrs. Gillian Blake, Chairperson of the Social Security Board Scholarship Committee, delivered the welcoming remarks, highlighting the momentous occasion where eight full-time scholarships and an unprecedented eighteen one-time scholarships were awarded, honoring the program’s four decades of service to education and nation building.
Honorable Geoffrey Hanley, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth Empowerment, et al, shared insightful remarks on the significance of the number 40, representing new life, growth, and transformation. He urged the awardees to “Prepare for the Climb,” inspiring them to embrace their educational journey.
The featured speaker, Pastor Tianna Bowery, an Alumni of the Social Security Board Scholarship Program, delivered an empowering message to the students, emphasizing the mantra: “I can be anything I want to be, because mediocrity is not for me.” She stressed the value of investing in education, skill development, and personal growth today, highlighting that these investments shape a brighter and more valuable future.
The ceremony proceeded with the award presentations. Mr. Curtis Martin, Deputy Chairperson for the Social Security Board, presented scholarships to High School recipients, while Mr. Christopher Louard, Director of the Social Security Board, presented awards to fifth form graduates. Hon. Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Education, et al, presented the award for the Top Fifth Form Graduate to Ms. Hazika Armontrading
The event concluded with the signing of the Commitment Agreement and expressions of appreciation by Mr. Jamari Liburd and Ms. Hazika Armontrading, followed by a heartfelt Vote of Thanks from Mr. Gary Liburd, Senior Manager of the Branch Office.
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, parents, guardians, mentors, and staff of the Social Security Board.
Social Security’s Scholarship program has an alumnus of over 200 scholars and includes dignitaries such as Hon Mark Brantley, Premier of Nevis, Mr Leslie Sugar Bowl Morton, Former National Queen Ms Johan Kelly amongst others. To date approximately $25 million has been directly invested in our nation’s students.
